Squirrels Born. Squirrels born from the summer mating season have little time to prepare for winter by fattening up and caching nuts than squirrels born in the spring. As a result, the long term survival rate for summer babies is typically lower than spring babies.
Most species have 3 or 4 babies at a time, but they could have as many as 9, and ground squirrels could have up to 15 at one time!
During colder seasons, mother squirrels may move into attics and other protected areas of buildings to raise their young. They are pink and bald at first. Black or melanistic squirrels produce excessive amounts of melanin in comparison to the wild type and in expanded regions of the body. He will be about the size of a woman's thumb.
